Typographic Book Jacket: The Overstory by Richard Powers
Intimate but analytical, this tyopgraphic cover for Richard Powers' The Overstory appeals to
both emotional and analytical interests.
The use of cursive hints at something personal
and intimate–like a diary
entry trying to make sense of a tangled memory–while the stark, simple lines and the serif
typeface, Warbler, imitates the taxonomic heirarchies
found in the classification and study of flora and fauna.
Combined with the texture of crumpled paper and faded ink, this cover evokes a
sense of history and familiarity.
The cover also hints at the interconnectedness of the novel’s (initialy) disembodied stories and
characters, and creates a parallel between the classification and evolution of flora and fauna, and a
sort of global, humanitarian family tree.
